Quilt Along 2014 & a finish!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone
for joining in the second Let's Bee Social linky party this week!
I had a wonderful time buzzing around to see what you all were sharing.
And I really appreciate your support!

Secondly, I am excited to be showing off my completed top with you today!
I am calling the pattern - Modern Charm.

Really pleased with how well this quilt top turned out to look in 'real life' as compared to this one drawn up in EQ7.  I always worry that I will be disappointed in the actual results.
Not this time!

Quick Questions....
What colour should I go with for the backing?
Should I use the same fabric as the background on the front - the Artichoke?
And does anyone have any suggestions for the quilting?

Thirdly, is there anyone out there who hasn't already committed to 'too many' new Quilt Alongs?
Craftsy is offering this FREE mini class, the 2014 BOM, which introduces you to color theory.
I am joining in because, when it comes to colour theory, I need all the help I can get!

Details for signing up to create a beautiful and colorful sampler quilt can be found here.

FREE Block of the Month class at Craftsy.com

Hope you will join me in the Block of the Month mini class!
I would love to see your progress as we quilt along!

Have a wonderful weekend and...
Keep On Quilting On!

What a great way to showcase charms, Lorna! I think a backing that works with the greens in the charms would give great pop!

I love this! such fun colors but even better, what a creative way to use a charm pack! So much visual interest.

I like how your quilt turned out! And, thanks for the shout out for the Craftsy class. I just signed up; I don't know if I'll make the blocks for the class, but I'm about to start on a block along based on the Vintage Revival book, so I could use some color theory help for that :-)

Wow, EQ7 did a great job of previewing the final result. Your top looks great, the colors really pop off of that background! My eyes are especially drawn to the green (or the pink!) so maybe that would be fun for the back. If you wanted to keep it super minimal, the black that outlines your blocks would be cool. Whatever you decide, it will look great!

Love how the colors pop! It's beautiful.

I like this a lot - I agree with Michelle that the E7 demo was pretty spot on! I'd choose a bright for the back, like the red near the top left, but I'm sure whatever you decide will look great!

Looks good! No answers to your questions, sorry. My brain was already fried out today :-)

Amazing quilt! I would pick some bright to contrast the background for the backing. I also tend to contrast with quilting (so I would do spirals or circles or waves). That's just me though! Totally missed the first linky - whoops!

A real charmer!

The quilt top looks fab, Lorna. Great job! :o)

Your quilt is beautiful Lorna. For the backing, if you have a fabric that you used in front that is a slate blue, or a grey blue-that would be pretty. for more brightness any of those bright greens too.
for quilting-that is always a dilema for me. I perhaps would not quilt in the little boxes of color-but in the ditch to make them pop-and then quilting in the rest of the space-perhaps even a boxie motive to go with the boxes of colors.

This is such a cute pattern! Love the background combined with the charm squares you used. Your quilt you drew up in EQ7 looks great (I have a copy of EQ in the mail to me and I am so excited to start playing with it). For the backing I might pull in some of the colors from the charm squares.

It`s awesome. You can use one of the top fabrics color.

To quilting how about circles or lines?

I joined two BOM and one QAL and some of my ufos are in my goal.

Wishing you a great weekend.

Lorna, that quilt came out great! For the binding, I would pick a bold color like that green! And thanks for bringing to our attention the Craftsy BOM. I just signed up for it! See you in class!

I would pick a backing that is somewhat subdued. Perhaps one of the flower prints. The gray one would blend if you decided on a gray for the quilting thread. Although, using a near solid that didn't blend with the quilting thread would result in a sort of whole-cloth look on the back.

The quilting for this one would be a challenge. Someone mentioned leaving the squares mostly free of quilting with some simple outlining or stitch-in-the-ditch to make them really pop. For the background, I would be tempted to use either feathers or some other stem-based design. Leah Day has some great designs in her Volume 2 Fillers class on Craftsy. Simple swirls would also give the background fabric some great texture.

As for the QALs, I'm trying to stay on task and work through some UFOs before I join in on any new projects. I did just join a mug rug swap, but those are doable in an afternoon. Much less of a commitment.

Hi Lorna, your top looks great. I would go for something bright and fun for the back, not the same as the background. Bright green, yellow, anything goes! as for quilting, ask yourself this: what do you want to highlight? The answer will come! Cheers!

I love how the bright colors pop on the dark grey background.

Love it...for the backing I would choose black probably. But that is just me, I like solid colour. For the quilting I would treat this a bit like a FMQ sampler and do different designs in each of the squares (like the one on Leah Day's FMQ project) You could choose some easy ones to start with.
Anyway, I have just returned from holidays, so I missed your link-up. Will definitely Bee in it next time.
Greeting from Karin

Maybe blue for the backing...the pattern is very sophisticated..love it!

Well Lorna...another fantastic finish! The colors are so much fun. I think I would make a pieced back with some of the great brights on the from. I think I'd consider spirals in the charms, and straight lines in the sashing.

Paula@TheSassyQuilter said...

I think some quilting with straight lines would suit well, maybe some echoing. The back...same would be ok, but I like my backs to be a little surprising and match whatever thread I am going to use:)

Beautiful! I like it even better than the mock up you made! Look forward to seeing this completed.

It is just gorgeous!! How about a chevron fabric for the back-I could see it either as grey/white chevron or one of bright color. For the quilting-how about a wavy line for the background and an orange peel in each of the colored sqs.

Farm Quilter said...

The green would make an awesome backing! Love your quilt! For the quilting, I would go with some of Angela Walters' designs - like the wavy ones with pebbles in the center for the background and where you have the rectangles dipping into the area between the squares throw in some feathers off the wavy lines, 888s or circles for the black sashing, and several different designs for the squares - pick one design for each color or fabric design to have some continuity between the squares. You did ask...hope this gives you some direction.
