Let's Bee Social #2

The subject for this Let's Bee Social linky party post is an introduction to my first project for 2014!
This set of Simply Style charms is the makings of a new quilt design.

Fabrics are Folio by Color Principle for Henry Glass Fabrics, Simply Style by V & Co. Charm Squares, and Artichoke of the The Morris Apprentice collection by Barbara Brackman for Moda .

Simply Style Charm Square Quilt

As I outlined previously in this post, a few of my quilty New Year's resolutions, were to buy more fabric, make more quilts and to focus on design.  New Year's resolutions have been known to be difficult to keep. But I am determined and I don't give up easily!

Simply Style Charm Quilt in Folio and Artichoke

The Artichoke was the best choice I could make at my LQS.  My hope is that the lighter shade of grey in this fabric will, in reality, be brighter in the finished quilt than it appears in this mock up.

But I wish I was more patient and would have ordered some fabric online to make this version.
The background fabric is Damask Rose in Grey by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.
This lighter grey version really pops!

Although I am getting to know my new EQ7, there is definitely a learning curve.
It is, of course, much more complicated than my old design method - graph paper.
After all...  I had perfectly mastered the operation of a pencil sharpener!

There have been a few projects I have been working on using my new design method.  And today I wanted to introduce you to Jodie of Fort Worth Fabric Studio.  She is sponsoring a giveaway here at Sew Fresh Quilts in February.  Meanwhile, we have been collaborating on the design end of things and she is now providing quilt kits for my patterns!

After making this version of my Layer Cake quilt, I drew it up in EQ7 and then added the Summer Breeze by Riley Blake Designs.  It is amazing to see how different a quilt can look just by plugging in an alternate collection of fabrics!

In case you missed it...
I shared a post just yesterday with more details on designing your own quilts here.

Don't you just love EQ7? I have the older version and love using it to lay out my quilts. Love your color choices for your quilt.

Your new patterns looks good! It'll be fun to watch your progress.

Both the Simply Style quilts look great. Isn't it amazing how different the same design looks just by using a different background? Fabulous! :o)

I really like the design of that quilt - can't wait to see it in the fabrics as you get going on it!

I love how all those colors pop against the greys. Can't wait to see it come together!

I really like the gray and the blue!! I'm glad your finding your way with EQ7. It is nice to see it useful for someone.

I never could get used to it. What you call learning curve, I called limitations hahahahaha! I dont often make traditional square type things though so it may just be that it doesn't fit my style.

You're doing great with EQ7 Lorna! I love working with it. Your quilt is going to be lovely with those fabrics! I am going a little nuts for Riley Blake at the moment. Great start with the linky too! ;-)

I love your new quilt design! I've been drawn to this type of quilt where there are black bordered squares that look linked together. I guess I like the stained glass look of it. I agree the damask background does make those colors pop. Keep up the good work!

I have seen this pattern done with each color block separate, and I like how you changed it so some chain together. With either background fabric I am sure it will look great!

Great quilt. I had EQ7 and then switched to a Mac book… Now I can't even use it and I'm so sad. Sorry I'm late to the party:)

Ooooh I'm glad to see you using EQ7! Mostly because I want to hear all about it and whether I should pick it up. :) I've definitely heard there's a learning curve, so I'm not surprised you're hitting that, but you're already making gorgeous designs!

Do you have the charm square quilt made into a pattern. I would love to try it

I have written up the pattern and and it will be available as soon as I finish the top. I always like to test the pattern for accuracy before publishing it, Patty. I will be making a new post when the top is finished!

Well, Rats! I missed your linky party. I'll just have to make sure I make it for next time. In the meantime, I'll be clicking away.

Congrats on the design! That is awesome. And you are right--fabric choices can make a quilt completely different.
